Ground-Breaking Experience
11/08/2000 - More than two years of planning have come to an end with work beginning on converting a large piece of land covered with trees and brush into a landmark for Timmins. About 30 locals made their way through rough terrain and gathered with Timmins Mayor Vic Power for the Shania Twain Interpretive Centres ground-breaking ceremony Monday.

"This is a landmark in Timmins and its something people will be looking for when they look at postcards of the City of Timmins," Power said to those in attendance before turning the sod with a golden-coloured shovel which wore the name Shania Twain.

"Were all looking forward for the centre to open on Canada Day 2001."

"Its a great day for Timmins because this is going to be our major tourist attraction, and with the name Shania Twain, its going to attract people from all over the world," Power said.

"Its a huge project thats very significant because it ties in with our future and, with the gold mine tour, it ties into our past," Power added.

Ken Petersen, Timmins Economic Development Corporation chairman, said the projects development is something the community should be proud of.

"I hope in 2001 and beyond well be able to develop more projects like this."

Jack Watson, operations manager for the Timmins Gold Mine Tour, said the key to the project is teamwork.

"Its a culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of individuals, and its nice to see that this type of teamwork can pull together to enhance the city."
