Talk of Move, Dissapointing
11/20/2000 - Georges Quirion, the project architect for the Shania Centre, who met with Shania last summer to get her input on the centre, is a little dissappointed. "Shania is behind this project 100 per cent it would be nice if the entire community could reflect her enthusiasm," said Quirion Friday, speaking the morning after a public meeting(Residents Want Centre to Move) proposing that the centre be moved to Schumacher.
The public meeting on the Centre on August 30th only drew 15 members of the general public compared to about 200 people last Thursday. This comes after construction has begun and work is underway to complete construction by July 1, 2001.
Though Quirion feels that the majority of Timmins understands the benefits of associating the centre with the Timmins Gold Mine Tour, he feels that the community needs to be sensitive to the fact that the eyes and ears of the world are upon us. A show of negative publicity surrounding the Centre could leave a bad taste in the mouths of those who are planning to visit Timmins and the Centre next summer.
"We went to Switzerland because it was important to demonstrate to her that the city was committed to producing an attraction at the same level of professionalism she brings to her career," said Quirion.
"We showed her this wont be a thorn in her career."
When she saw the plans and the quality of people we had involved in the project, she said 'Wow! You guys are really serious. This is a wonderful project!' he concluded.
