Recovering The Costs
03/07/2001 - Depending on the spending habits of the 30,000 visitors projected to visit the Shania Twain Centre in its debut year, the city could break even on its investment in one year. The stunning possibility was stated by the city's chief clerk Jack Watson at a special Timmins council meeting Monday. The centre is on schedule to open July 1 at the Timmins Underground Gold Mine tour and two independent consulting firms estimate that around 30,000 visitors will visit in the first year.

"We're really confident the centre will draw well in its first year" said Watson. Other years will depend on marketing and on making it new each year, with changing features that will encourage repeat visits and bring the centre to the next level.

Will Saari, manager of Tourism Timmins, provided details about staffing for the centre. The first year should see five full-time and 10 part-time staff at the Shania Twain Centre, with expansion on demand. Management will fall under the operations and sales sector of the operations manager of the Timmins Gold Mine Tour, who is responsible, through Tourism Timmins, to the city clerks department.

Saari noted that in many cases, one person will handle a number of the duties on the organizational chart. "Separate management will be considered only if business warrants it" said Watson. "We'll proceed with caution, rather than over staff and then cut back."
